What Is The Polite Thing to Do When You Receive a Message and Have to Call Back....?

Q: I received a message over my phone from the editor of our newspaper. I have tried to call him back a couple of times today, but his message says that he's away from his desk. Part of me thinks that leaving a message would just be the start of "message ping pong". Would you suggest leaving a message or trying to call back every so often to reach him? Thanks!

A: I would still call the editor back and let them know that you received the first message and you were returning the call. Maybe suggest a time that would be best for them to call you or just say that you will return their call.
